Alaska Flag Facts
• A little over 30 years before Alaska became a state, the Alaska Department of the American Legion sponsored a contest for Alaskan children. Benny Benson, a 13 year old, won the contest in 1927. Benny’s design was chosen to represent the future flag of the Territory of Alaska.
• The flag of Alaska consists of eight gold stars, forming the Big Dipper and Polaris.
• The Big Dipper symbolizes a bear, an animal indigenous to Alaska.
• The stars depicted on the flag can be used as a guide to locate Polaris and determine true north.
