What’s up with the Ukrainian flag, huh?
The Ukrainian flag is about as simple and straightforward as it gets. One horizontal half of the flag is yellow, the other is blue. End of story.
Here’s the cool stuff: this flag has been used since the 12th century. It was officially adopted in 1918, but the yellow and blue flag predates that adoption handily.
These colors were said to represent fire and water. Several different military factions and kingdoms of the surrounding area in the 12th century used these colors in their insignia. Others note that the yellow bottom of the flag juxtaposed with the top blue portion reminds Ukrainians of the golden wheat fields below the blue sky, a common scene in Ukraine.
