United States Flag

National symbols require the highest caliber of respect. One of the most recognizable symbols for any country is, of course, its national flag. When it comes to honoring your country, military, or any other proud allegiance, you need to make sure you’re doing it correctly. After all, a flag has the power to communicate everything about your personal values and history. In this blog, we’re going to explain the appropriate protocol for displaying flags indoors – helping you to bring a greater sense of pride to your school, church, home, business, or anywhere else!

The Importance of Displaying Military Flags Correctly

Many people will have gone through their lives never learning the specifics of flag presentation and etiquette. Unsurprisingly, this can often lead to national and military flags being presented in ways that accidentally show some disrespect. To help make the process easier, we’re going to outline all the key facts to remember when displaying a flag indoors.

When you’re mounting the national colors to the wall of a room on a staff, always remember to fly it to the right of the room, at the very front. If there are any other flags being flown on separate staffs, they all need to be displayed to the left of the United States flag. If displayed against a wall alongside another flag with crossed staffs, the national flag should always be in front. When several flags are all flown from the same mounting, you should ensure that the U.S.A. flag is always centered and in the most prominent position.

Displaying Flags in Windows

When displaying a flag in a window, you need to remember who you’re displaying it for. Although the flag is technically inside, its position ensures that it is being presented to those outside. Your patriotism is on display for all those passing by, so when you stand and look at it from the inside perspective, the flag should be backward.

The easiest way to make sure you’ve displayed your flag correctly so that those outside the building view it the right way is to head outside and view it from the street or sidewalk yourself. If the blue field of stars, known as the Union, is to your left as you observe the flag, then it is displayed correctly. If it is to your right – you’re going to need to head back in to flip it around!

Displaying Flags in Halls and Corridors

Now, when displaying flags in corridors, things can get a little more complicated. As a general rule, any flag suspended vertically needs to have the Union to the left of anyone entering the hall. In scenarios where there are multiple entrances to the corridor, the positioning needs to be directional. In an east/west corridor, the Union needs to be facing north. In a north/south corridor, then the Union needs to face east.

Displaying Flags on a Platform

When a flag is displayed on a staff that sits on a platform, there are a few key rules to follow. The national colors should be placed to the right of the speaker, meaning it sits to the left of the audience facing the platform. From there, any other flags should be placed on the left of the national flag. There are some exceptions to the rule, but nowadays this is the overall expectation.

The Flag Flying Order

When displaying a series of military flags, there is a certain order in which to fly them. It might seem trivial to some people inexperienced in this world, but it’s important to ensure that you’re displaying flags in the appropriate order. Here is the expected flag-flying sequence to follow, from first to last: U.S. flag, state flag, POW/MIA flag, army flag, Marine Corps, Navy flag, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.
